One of the greatest pieces of literature ever written was Don Miquel de Cervantes epic, two volume work: Don Quixote of La Mancha.
Published in 1605 and 1615 Cervantes created two fictional characters: the protagonist a retired 50 year old man, Don Quixote; who given to incessant reading of chivalry loses all touch with reality, then creating his own; and his squire, the steadfast, Sancho Panza who questioned Quixote’s sanity but obediently followed his master from one conflict to the next.
Looking back upon the past six years of the Obama presidency, even once ardent supporters are beginning to realize, four hundred years ago, Cervantes may have been prescient in his thinking.
Playing the part of Sancho Panza, former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton and current occupant of that post, John Kerry have abetted Obama in one misadventure after another. Viewing the world imaginatively, bereft of American leadership, he’s managed to alienate friends while emboldening our enemies.
From the get go of his presidency, Obama embarked upon his infamous mea culpa tour of the Middle East. Bypassing the only constitutional, democratic country in the Middle East, Israel, he culminated his trip with his nefarious Cairo speech on June 4, 2009.
Blinded by quixotic reality the speech was replete with disingenuous paragraphs such as: “I have come here to seek a new beginning between the United States and Muslims around the world; one based upon mutual interest and mutual respect; and one based upon the truth that America and Islam are not exclusive, and need not be in competition. Instead, they overlap, and share common principles, principles of justice and progress; tolerance and the dignity of all human beings.”
If there were any Copts in the audience, I wonder what they were thinking? People less enthralled with his rhetoric may also have asked when last a person was allowed to practice Christianity in Saudi Arabia? Shared common principles with America? Awash with misogyny and homophobia, Sharia law is the quintessential antithesis of American constitutional values.
Some may ask, why bring up a speech given by a nascent president five years ago, where is its relevance today? Simply, it was this speech that foretold a mendacious president and a disastrous foreign policy for years to come.
Like our fabled character, Obama spawns his own reality. Then as now he’s refuses to come to grips with the unmistakeable fact that we may not be at war with Islam but Islam is certainly at war with us.
In 2012, Dr. Sebastian L. v. Gorka, Military Affairs Fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said: the Obama Administration is rapidly revising federal counter-terrorism training materials in order to eliminate references to Jihad and Islam.” He went on to say: “The administration believes there are “good” Islamists and “bad” Islamists and the former can be dealt with. He said this policy is apparent in the decision by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to have contact with the Muslim Brotherhood “Supreme Guide” Mohammed Badei.” The same Muslim Brotherhood that hatched such wonderful groups as Al-Qaeda, Hamas, and Hezbollah, yet was described by Director of National Intelligence, James Clapper as a “largely secular organization.”
Pushing his fantasy of an idyllic, Islamic world, one which shares the values of American constitutional law, Obama has succeeded emasculating law enforcement domestically and the nation’s military as well.
In November 2009, screaming “Allahu Akbar” as he shot and killed thirteen fellow soldiers, maiming thirty others, former army psychiatrist, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan has recently asked to become a citizen of ISIS. Despite numerous communications with his mentor, the now deceased American born terrorist, Al-Awlaki, and by his own admission: “I don’t think what I did was wrong because it was for the greater cause of helping my Muslim brothers,” the Obama Administration still refused to categorize the Fort Hood massacre as an Islamic terrorist attack. Till this day they absurdly depict it as work place violence. Shunning abundant evidence of Hasan’s affiliation to Islamic terrorism, both the FBI and the military for politically correct and career considerations allowed this loose cannon to succeed with his mayhem. And the beat goes on.
People are still agape over the President’s golfing fiasco just moments after consoling the parents of beheaded journalist James Foley, they shouldn’t be.
In 2012, as Americans were commemorating the September 11, 2001 attacks, our consulate in Benghazi, Libya was burned to the ground killing Ambassador Christopher Stevens along with three other Americans. What followed this sordid outrage were an avalanche of consummate lies fed to the American public:
On national television Susan Rice repeatedly attributed a YouTube video called “The Innocence of Muslims” for the terrorist attack, a charge soon proven to be patently untrue; Secretary Clinton denuded apathy, blurting out “what difference does it make;” during Senate testimony. Debating Governor Romney, Obama falsely stated he had always called the attack terrorist. To those without blinders, what was indisputable was Obama’s mundane grasp of national tragedy.
Seemingly in agreement with his secretary of state, the following morning, September 12, at 10:35 A.M. The president gave a brief press conference, confirmed the death of Ambassador Stevens, and left little doubt, he was more the leader of his party than his country. By mid afternoon he was in the air to Las Vegas for an evening fundraiser.
Although it would have no effect upon his re-election, earlier that year in March, Obama unexpectedly was caught on camera chatting with then Russian President, Dimitri Medvedev. Discussing missile defense, he Placed his left hand on Medvedev’s lap and as if speaking to an old friend rather than an unrequited cold warrior uttered: “This is my last election. After my election, I have more flexibility.” To which Medvedev replied: “I understand. I will transmit this information to Vladimir.”
No doubt he did. Anticipating the response or lack thereof from the leader of the free world and in repayment for such heartfelt obeisance, Putin annexed the Crimea earlier this year, with one eye on doing the same to Eastern Ukraine, and the other on the Baltic states.
Sensing weakness, lack of resolve, and an inability to follow thru, the bad guys of the world; Iran, Russia, China, and countless Islamic groups are on the move. Whether by design or ineptness, placation to avoid conflict has actually spurred it on; see ISIS.
Speaking of which, this past Wednesday Obama gave his much anticipated speech outlying to both friend and this barbaric enemy exactly what he will and will not do in the upcoming; what he is so reticent to say, war.
His strategy, to what earlier this month was referred to as containment has since pivoted to defeating ISIS:
- Significantly expand the bombing campaign in Iraq.
- Train and equip the Iraqi army and Kurdish troops.
- Begin bombing in Syria.
- Train and arm the Syrian rebels.
- Get regional actors like Saudi Arabia and European allies on board to counter ISIS’ regional and international influence.
- Keep US troops out and stay away from the Syrian and Iranian governments.
As is his custom of once again putting the horse before the carriage, his two strongest allies, Britain and Germany have said no thanks to bombing ISIS in Syria. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier went as far as to say: “We have neither been asked to do that, nor will we do that.” So until Luxembourg, San Marino, and Lichtenstein weigh in, it looks like whatever help he can get from the EU will be ancillary.
Train and arm the Syrian rebels? Which are the good and which are the bad? Arguably, they are all part of the ugly.
Regional despots such as King Abdullah of Jordan and King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia who stand to loose more than the their kingdoms if ISIS has its way have pledged to hold our jackets in this fight. Even Turkey bordering this mess, having so much to lose has refused to take part in this ill-conceived coalition.
As if the enemy and the cloud of war have no say in the matter, declaring no boots on the ground is perhaps the most bizarre plan a leader has had since Don Quixote tried convincing Sancho Panza to join him attacking windmills he saw as giants:
What giants? “asked Sancho Panza of his master. “It is easy to see,” replied Don Quixote, “that thou art not used to this business of adventures; those are giants; and if thou art afraid, away with thee out of this and betake thyself to prayer while I engage them in fierce and unequal combat.”
Unfortunately, as he attempts to rally the free world against a real enemy, Obama today is seen by potential coalition partners thru the eyes of the quizzical Sancho Panza.
